A Bright Nuclear Future?
The Biden Administration is pushing a ‘net zero’ carbon footprint for power generation, meaning the virtual elimination of coal fired plants. This will require between 550-770 gigawatts of new power generation. Currently, nuclear generates around 100 gigawatts. Wind and Solar require large tracts of land and as is seen with the Lava Ridge proposed project, such projects are not popular with a large segment of the population.
That leaves nuclear as an option but the building of new nuclear plants is all but dead and many existing plants have shut down. Still, that may be on the verge of changing given the goals and newer nuclear technology options. A new type of nuclear plant is expected to become operational by 2030 generating 460 megawatts of power on Idaho National Laboratory land. Others of varying size could follow shortly thereafter.
